Hi person from (none),you are hit #
since January 15th 1999
page
I have not tried all the emulators I mention on this page
so don't blame me if you use them and they suck or they crash
you and trash your file system, and don't e-mail me about
ROMs
such requests are filed to /dev/null
Arcade game emulation
The number one emulator for arcade games for almost any
platform is MAME. The Unix version is called XMAME.It supports
over 3000 games at this point some of which are just different
versions of the same game.
Bootleg versions of games are often exactly the same, as
far as I can tell.
The XMAME main page can be currently found here:

and also the TkMame (Tcl/Tk frontend) homepage.Very cool.

RAINE is another arcade emulator and
it's target is Motorola 68k games, there is a list of them on the site
of course. This has ASM cores so it's blazingly fast compared to an emu
written in C alone. I have had problems with sound and the joystick,
but I think the joystick is a problem with the new Linux kernel (2.4)
It even comes with a GUI and runs on console (svgalib and 'ModeX' and GGI)
The System 16 Emulator plays games made by Sega from the mid-80s
only available for linux-svgalib, it runs Space Harrier full screen at
a high speed for me, excellent stuff. No sound ( I don't know if
there is suppose to be???) and it works with my Joystick.
Get it here:System 16 homepage(linux)
Another arcade emulator is
Replay+
which I have not used, yet.
The old version called Replay, no + sign,
supported 118 games.
There is another arcade emulator called Xcade but I can't find a
homepage for it.
The same guy who is doing the (port from Win32) Turbo Grafx 16 emu listed below is
also doing an emulator (port from Win32) of the arcade game Nemesis(aka Gradius). It
runs very very slowly. I don't think it would run full speed on an
Alpha 667mhz CPU with a Gig of RAM...too slow to play, but these emus
are for education purposes only anyway, right?
Atari 2600 Emulation
We all remember the Atari 2600 don't we? These are various emulators
for that 2k per cart wonder... now you can play Yar's Revenge at
_almost_ full speed on a Pentium 200!! Kidding!
The Stella
Emulator is the best of the 2 I have tried. Version 1.0 is
pretty decent. The Joystick controls are still screwed up however
Virtual 2600 emu
has been around for a while and has been ported to many
platforms.
However in my limited amount of usage for it, I'd have to say
Stella is much better.
The Atari Emulation and ROM page might not have a snappy name,
but it sure delivers the goods! Click here to dig in:

Intellivision Emulator
This system was my 1st when I was a kid. I had around 90-100 games for
it back then. I currently have 91 different carts for it by searching
them out at flea markets and thrift stores.
Joseph Zbiciak's Intellivision emu is a newish product and it doesn't
play games yet but you can 'run' some of the demos that were made
by mattel programmers like 'easter' and 'halloween'.
NEW NEWS: there is preliminary keyboard and intv pad support in the newest version, when the graphics part of the driver is done games should be playable!
Let's hope this project continues and will let us poor Unix people
play some Intellivision games on our computers.
You can already hook up intellivision 2 pads and use them! There is a
driver for Linux to use this INTV2PC box that connects via a serial port or something,
I don't have one of these I'd like to check it out though!
Check the intv page HERE
Nintendo GameBoy Emulators
I never had one of these, so this is my 1st exposure to the games
, and some are suprisingly OK, I do remember seeing people
playin hope these and thinking how bad the LCD graphics were. They
are better due to no flickering, at least. Some of the games are
kind of fun....Marat Fayzulin is the original author of the code
for Virtual Game Boy, but due to idiots flaming him for not giving
out ROMs and other stupid shit, he no longer distributes the Source
code and only offers Binary distros of this now....(check page for
details for your OS):
Marat's Virtual Gameboy
page
Hans de Goede is the maintainer of the Linux enhanced and svgalib
versions, and since Marat is no longer giving out source code,
he is continuing the development on his own.I am currently
using version 0.7.11 of xvgb and it seems to work very well....try
clicking
HERE
to find out more about what Hans is up to....
Yet Another Game Boy emulator is GBE. This one even has some Color Gameboy support.
Boycott is a multi-platform Gameboy emu. I have not tried it yet.
Emulator
Marat Fayzulin is also the coder behind ColEm,a Colecovision
emulator. If you are an old fart like me you remember what a stir
Colecovision's Donkey Kong was, finally a video game for home that
actually LOOKED like an arcade game (barring atari's version of
Berzerk I guess) I have only played a few games for this emu but
it seems to work perfectly, 2010 and Space Panic being the only
games I have tried. You can download the source for this milestone
in home console gaming history from this page:Marat's ColEm page
Coleco Adam Emulation
Marcel de Kogel has written an Adam emulator that I have not tried yet
ADAMem It also
runs Colecovision games!(I tried it now, it's good!)
Nintendo 8-bit console (NES) emulators
I think everyone knows this system. This was also known as the
Famicom (Family Computer) in Japan and the Dandy in various Eastern European
countries. there are quite a few emulators for this system.
iNES
XNes
NEStra
TuxNES
NOTE: see also DarcNES and MESS below.
Sega Master System/Game Gear
I've used this a few times but I prefer to play it on the original deck
so I can't comment much on it except, it seems to run everything I have
tried perfectly.
Sega 8 bit emu
Sega 8 bit emu(svgalib version)
Sega Genesis
There are 2 Genni emus for Linux not including the MESS one.
If anyone knows the homepage URL for GenEM, let me know.
DGen/SDL is the other
Genesis emulator. It uses the SDL graphics lib which is quite nice!
the SDL version of Doom/Decent/Hexen/more are available from the SDL homepage.
As far as I can tell there was another Genesis emu,but it's
long dead it seems. It was called Generator.
Super Nintendo (SNES) emulation
SNES9x was the most popular SNES emulator then it was withdrawn, now it's back!
Check out snes9x homepage for the latest...
Another project to bring the SNES to Linux is SNEmul.
As far as I know it's no longer being developed.
Nintendo Virtual Boy Emulator
I was shocked to find out there is an Emulator for Linux for this system.
I was playing this system this morning, god what a headache giver!
If you never saw this system it was basically a pair of goggles with red
pixel graphics and the view in each eye piece was skewed a little bit
giving the illusion of depth. If you missed what I'm saying I'm saying it's
3-D! I have only 1 ROM to test this with and I was wondering how they'd
fake the 3-d , I mean the original VB has _2_ screens it draws to at same time
that'd be awkward to play games with at the very least.
A
this pong home brew demo runs in black and white AND is extremely slow.
I am assuming this is not going to be a usable emu on slow hardware ever.
I have a p166 with 96 megs and 4 Meg Matrox Mystique and it is maybe 10% working speed.
anyway the web page is at:http://dana.ucc.nau.edu/~dbt/VBMain.html
Nintendo 64 emu
This is an emu I can't try out the right way since you need some kind of
Voodoo type videocard to use it. it showed some stuff on the screen from some
homebrewed games/demos but REALLY slowly.
Check it out at: www.snes9x.com/n64emulators
UPDATE: This project might be dead I have been unable to find it listed on any
emu pages now, or on the 3 URLs the emus author gave me when I emailed him.
The above link is dead.
Also another N64 emu called Ninu appears to be totally dead.
Sony Playstation emu
This newish project is trying to bring this almost current generation
system to us GNU folks. It is being developed for Alpha and x86 machines
good news for people with Alphas, I guess. Anyway this runs demos, and the
one I tried it ran it extremely slowly. I drove down to the post office and
came back and it was still running. But what do you want, it's alpha level
stuff
It's called SOPE.
The ePSXe emulator has a linux port that runs ok but still needs some
work. a lot of slow downs and speed ups plague it right now.
Another Playstation emu is PCSX, check it out, I haven't yet.
Atari Lynx
This fairly unpopular handheld had an emulator but I could
never get it to work, I think the project is dead.
Try Linux Handy
Turbo Grafx 16/PC Engine
This great, mostly overlooked system is emulated for a number
of Unix OSs. BUT the emulator runs pretty slow. Check it out if you want.
Kurati's Emulation page (see also Nemesis emu)
The above link is now dead. IF anyone has a new one, let me know.
Multi System emulators
DarcNES is an emulator that
plays NES,Sega Master System, and Turbo Grafx 16 (aka PCE) games.
Haven't tried it yet.
Another multisystem emu, which is a child of the MAME project is MESS
This seems to be a stalled project. The URL is http://mess.emuverse.com/
Misc ROMs
The Emulation Webring has something to the order of 54 sites
all linked together,it's REAL hit or miss, as many of the
pages
are run by 14 year olds and/or are on Geocities
Enter

Non-gaming emulators for *nix
The most well known emulator under *nix has to be DOSemu it comes with
most Linux distros to begin with.It works with a lot of stuff
but I can't get the Intellivision emu for DOS working under it
and some other games I tried out too, but people report Doom
will work under it so that's a good sign, I also hear Windows3.1
can be made to work in protected 286 mode or something...
UAE is an Amiga emu
Lesine from efnet irc keeps mentioning it
but I have not tried it
fMSX is an Emulator for the
MSX home computer which I had not heard of until I visited Marat
Fayzulin's web page
PDP-11 Emulator: the machine most of Unix was developed on. Also PDP-1,pdp8,pdp18,NOVA8,and more emulators are included in this FREEWARE package. Commercial emulators are also available for this classic machine.
WINE:Windows emulator
Caldera makes WABI a windows
emulator
a WABI info page based on users
input
Executor is an Emulator for MacOS (yes,
Macintosh) for Linux/X,Linux/svbalib,NeXtstep and Win/DOS as well.
an "Open/370" emulator,Whatever that
is/was.....
Insignia makes SoftWindows
which lets you run Windows 95 apps on various Unix
OSs
Atari800
emulator
x64 C64/128
emulator/simulator for Unix.
x64 is now known asVICE (Versatile Commodore Emulator)
Frodo a C64 emulator for AmigaOS/BeOS/Unix
TSR-80 emulation page
(Radio
Shack forever!)
BOCHS is an Emulator of x86
CPUs. Now if you are saying, "I run a 3/4/586,
what do I need that
for?" well,
it allows you to run DOS/Windows/Windows 95/Minix2.0 and other OSs
concurrently with Linux/Solaris/FreeBSD...maybe others...
Sunsite's
Linux emulator's directory is just what it says
Links to other *nix Emulation pages
Freshmeat's
X11 index of emus. a few things on there not on this page, and constantly updated.
Freshmeat's
index of console based emulators. Same as above with the obvious difference.
Loki's emulation page
is a good site with lots of detailed descriptions and links
(I stole some links from there of course :-) )
Other semi-personal stuff
RIFUG is the Rhode Island Free Unix Group which is a local users group I co-founded I guess. F' Microsoft.
Dropdead is this band I play in.
Japankore was a paper fanzine I use to do. Here is the online version and it's an archival version it hasn't been updated since mid 1997 and it never will be updated I guess.
